Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival in modern China, or simply the Lunar New Year, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 Jan and 20 Feb. The upcoming year of the Dog commences on Friday, 16 February 2018.

Every year of this time, many workers will quite their jobs and back to the hometown. Their reasons are same. ‘Back hometown earlier, buy ticket easier.’ But the practical reasons are

  1. The orders short leads workers have nothing to do.

  2. To avoid spring festival crush.

  3. The overall quality of rural labor force is not high.

Let’s briefly examine each of item:

  1. Everybody knows that in the second half of year is the peak season. There is a lot of holidays during this time and many promotion activities on the online/offline market. It’s also the busiest time for factories. After peaked, enter the January. The fall-off the demand leads workers have no work to do. And the upcoming spring festival certainly hastened workers departure from the factory.

  2. Transportation during spring festival period in China with extremely high traffic load around the time. The period usually begins 15 days before Lunar New Year's Day and lasts for around 40 days. The number of passenger-journeys during the period is projected to be hitting over 3.0 billion in 2017. Under this situation, the faster/earlier, the more chance to get the ticket.

  3. Many of workers come from countryside with a largely uneducated. Most of them without ideal, no pursuit and no motivation. And they will easier have affected by circumstance. There’s few more who changed their thinking and in practice can become management in the factory. But large of them tossed about like ships in a storm. They repeat action like an endless loop: resign---back to the hometown---come to the industrial park---find the job on assembly line---resign.

Due to these reasons, every time before and last Chinese New Year factory will face workforce shortage issue. Most of factory will be closed before 1 week from Chinese New Year and restart after 15 to 20days. Therefore, the lead time will be longer than general time.
